Medflow Congratulates AAO on EHR Standards

Charlotte, NC, August 10, 2011 – Medflow, Inc., a leading provider of Electronic Health Records for Ophthalmology, applauds the American Academy of Ophthalmology for defining a set of standards for EHR (Electronic Health Records) for ophthalmic practices.

Over the past five years, the Academy’s Medical Information Technology Committee has been working to create guidelines that will lead the eye care community into the future with an emphasis on efficient quality care and to achieve meaningful use. AAO member surveys show that the majority of ophthalmic practices have not yet adopted electronic health records, with many citing that they have been waiting for more guidance, such as that now offered in the AAO’s report.

The guidelines consist of 17 “essential” features and 6 “desirable” features in the areas of clinical documentation, ophthalmic vital signs, surgical management, and ophthalmic imaging. The guidelines were created to help guide Ophthalmologists and their staff when making a decision as to which EHR system to purchase for their practice.. The new guidelines have been published in the August 2011 journal Ophthalmology and are available online at the Academy’s website (www.aao.org).

“We strongly believe that standardization is key to adoption by ophthalmologists,” commented Medflow CEO Jim Riggi. “It was very important that the guidelines included a DICOM standard as a baseline for image management in Eye Care” Riggi added.

Medflow has participated in the AAO committee’s working sessions since inception. Medflow EHR software meets all 17 of the essential guidelines as well as the 6 desired features, according to the company.
